About us

Clear Credit Insights. Confident Lending Decisions.

National Credit Intelligence brings licensed lenders together to support informed lending decisions. Before approving a loan, members can review an applicant's borrowing history, access information shared by other members, and receive a consolidated credit report, with a credit rating where available.

01Who we are

Independent, and owned by no lender

The registry is an entity of its own. It is not part of any bank or lender, and it does not lend. It serves its member institutions: the banks and other licensed lenders that extend credit in Somalia.

Each member keeps its own books. The registry is the link between them. When a member is about to lend, it asks the registry about its applicant, and the registry asks every other member whether they know the person. It puts their answers together in one credit report and, when a member reports a loan for the person, gives a credit rating with its reasons.

02What we do

Better information before every loan

  • Assess risk

Lenders can check a borrower's credit history before approving a loan.

  • Reduce loan defaults

It helps identify borrowers who may struggle to repay.

  • Set the right loan terms

Lenders can decide suitable loan amounts and repayment periods.

  • Prevent fraud

Six identity details checked on every application help detect false identities, multiple loan applications and other fraudulent activity.

03How we work

Six principles behind every report

  • Independent

The registry answers to no single member. Every member is asked the same question, and every applicant is rated on the same published scale.

  • Information, not decisions

The registry never approves or refuses a loan. The report and the rating inform the member's decision; the member decides, on its own checks.

  • Confidential

Members are never named to one another. The member asking is not told who answered, and the members asked are not told who is asking.

  • Accurate

Members report every loan every month, and each report is checked before it is accepted. A report and its rating are kept exactly as they were released.

  • Fair to borrowers

A person is checked only when they apply for credit and consent to it. Anyone who believes something reported about them is wrong can ask for it to be corrected by the member that reported it.

  • Secure

Access is by named account only. Every sign-in, enquiry and document opened is recorded, and each member sees only what concerns its own applications and loans.

04The rating

One scale for everyone

A person who has taken a loan is rated from how their loans have been repaid, and how late any late payment was: a score out of 100 and one of fifteen grades, from A+ to E−, with a new grade every 5 points. Below 50 is the red zone, kept for a debt in default: anyone who has caught up or repaid is rated above it, and a borrower who pays on time, with the rest of the record in order, is rated A+ from the first payment. Each rating comes with its reasons in plain words, and someone who has never borrowed is not rated.
