National Credit Intelligence

Clear Credit Insights. Confident Lending Decisions.

National Credit Intelligence brings licensed lenders together to support informed lending decisions. Before approving a loan, members can review an applicant's borrowing history, access information shared by other members, and receive a consolidated credit report, with a credit rating where available.

An example enquiry. A member bank asks the registry about an applicant; the amount it is about to lend stays with that bank. The registry asks the six other members whether they know the person. All six answer. Member A knows the person as a borrower who repaid on time, and Member C as a borrower with one late payment; Members B, D, E and F do not know the person. One reply goes back to the asking bank: rating A, low risk, 86 out of 100, made from the 2 loans at other members.

01The registry

What the registry does

Until now, a lender deciding on a loan has seen only its own books. The registry is the go-between of licensed lenders: it lets each one hear from all the others through one independent desk, without any lender handing its customers to another.

A proven repayment record can stand in place of collateral, so credit reaches people who have no title deed to pledge.
  • Assess risk

Lenders can check a borrower's credit history before approving a loan.

  • Reduce loan defaults

It helps identify borrowers who may struggle to repay.

  • Set the right loan terms

Lenders can decide suitable loan amounts and repayment periods.

  • Prevent fraud

Credit registries help detect false identities, multiple loan applications, and other fraudulent activity.

02How it works

From one question to one report

Every enquiry follows the same four steps, from the member's question to a single report it can lend on.

  1. Step 1

    A member asks

Before lending, a member bank sends its applicant's details to the registry.

  2. Step 2

    Every other member is asked

One question goes to all the other members: do you know this person? Each answers from its own books: not known, or known as a borrower or a guarantor, with every loan and how it has been repaid.

  3. Step 3

    The answers come together

The registry puts the answers into one report. When a member reports a loan, it rates the applicant from how their loans have been repaid: from the members' answers alone.

  4. Step 4

    One report goes back

The member receives the report, and the rating with its reasons, and decides. The registry never approves or refuses a loan.

What a member receives

One report, never the other members' names.

Credit report ENQ-2026-00142 Example
Low riskRating A, 86 out of 100
The members' answers
All 6 members asked have answered. Out of the 6, 2 know the applicant, both as a borrower.
Loans at other members
2 loans: one repaid on time throughout, one with a single payment 10 days late in the last year.

Why the rating is A

  • Repaid on time at two other members for two years.
  • One payment 10 days late, in the last year.
  • Owes two lenders at the same time.

When is a rating given?

A rating comes from a loan record: each loan, its payment plan and how it has been repaid.

Has taken a loan beforeRated on fifteen grades, from A+ to E−, with a score out of 100 and the reasons in plain words, once a member bank reports the loan in its answer and a first payment has been made on it, whatever its amount. Someone with a loan and a payment plan at one bank is rated when they apply for a loan at another.
Never taken a loanNo rating for someone who has never borrowed, and none before a first payment is made on a first loan. The report says why, and the member decides on the application itself.

The rating scale fifteen grades, a new grade every 5 points

  1. 80–100Low risk: grades A+, A and A−
  2. 65–79Moderate risk: grades B+, B and B−
  3. 50–64Elevated risk: grades C+, C and C−
  4. 35–49High risk: grades D+, D and D−
  5. 0–34Very high risk: grades E+, E and E−

03Who it serves
